Nico

Last Updated:  January 22, 2025

Date of Arrival:  October 18, 2024

Age:  3 1/2 years old (Born April 21, 2021)

Breed:  Pomeranian

Size:  10-12 lbs

Gender:  Male

Adoption Status:  Nico is available for adoption

Must Haves:  Cuddle sessions, clear expectations, seasonal attire (look good, feel good!)

Personality:  Nico, for the most part, is a super, sweet little guy. He loves a good snuggle, likes everyone he meets, and loves being brushed. However after a few weeks in care, we saw that when Nico is allowed too much freedom and not enough accountability, he can act out. He needs a home with clear boundaries, with humans who will be his calm and confident leaders.

House training/Pee Pad Training:  Nico is outdoor trained. He was showing some marking behaviours inside when he first came to Cupcakes, but this has stopped with correction.

Walks/Leash Training:  Nico loves going for walks and does well on a leash. He could walk for hours if you'd let him! He would be an excellent companion for walking or mini hikes, as he is quite agile.

Children:  Before coming to Cupcakes, Nico lived with children and we were told there were no issues. In his first foster home with us, he did show some aggression, particularly towards the adult male in the home. After moving to a different foster home, we quickly saw that he is not truly an aggressive dog, he just does not shine when he is babied and spoiled. He needs a home with very clear rules and expectations, where he understands that the humans are in charge. He will not do well with someone that will feel sorry for him or allow him to take charge and and rule the roost. For this reason, we are looking for a child-free home or a home with dog-savvy teens.

Dogs, Cats and Other Friends:  Nico does well with dogs, but can be a bit bossy or pushy with them. Any dogs in his adoptive home would need to be fairly easy-going. As he can be a bit anxious, it would be best for him to have a calm buddy, not one that feeds off his anxiety. He previously lived with a cat, so we expect that a home with dog-savvy pets would be fine.

Best Home Environment:  Nico has a bit of separation anxiety. His fosters are helping him work through this, but a home with shared walls may not be ideal, as he sometimes uses his voice when left alone. He also needs a home where expectations are clear and rules are fairly enforced, not someone that will baby him.

Preference may be given to a home with a securely fenced yard.

A note about secure fencing - While each dog is different in the level of security needed, we require the fence be of a height that the dog could not jump over (some of our dogs can easily scale a 5 foot fence), no gaps in fencing, gate is secure, and the bottom of the fence is also free from gaps or areas where a dog could dig out from underneath.

A note about being a flight risk - Flight risk can be the result of many things, including fear, lack of "street-wise" skills, or incredible curiosity for the sights, smells, and sounds on the other side of the fence. Any of these reasons could lead to the dog attempting to break free of their leash or seek out gaps so they can move past the fence.

We strongly encourage adopters to enrol in a basic obedience course with the dog they adopt. Participating in an obedience course can help build trust between human and dog, help the dog gain confidence and social interaction skills, and build strong recall skills, in addition to the on and off leash skills that basic obedience training can provide.

Health:  Nico has completed his vetting and is a clinically healthy dog. He also had a groom recently and did extremely well, almost falling asleep while his nails were being dremeled. Good boy, Nico!

History:  Nico is an owner surrender.

Adoption Fee:  Nico's adoption fee is $500.
